Visual Piece

When producing my visual piece, I decided the best method would be to produce a handcrafted book, as one of my aims throughout this research was to re-gain my interest and passion for handcrafted artifacts.  The contents of the book would be based upon the techniques and the progression of printing.  I wanted to select one specialized area in order to project my outcomes and opinions. 

The idea for my visual piece came to me when visiting Central Saint Martins Museum and Contemporary Collection.  The original works of many famous artists, typographers, designers and craftsman, including William Morris –Wallpaper Designs and Eric Gills – Lettering Typeface Sheets amongst others, inspired me.  Through encompassing the original workings of such influential designers and typographers, it really made me appreciate the considerable amount of time and labour spent to go into each individual piece. 

My visual book consists of a selection of printing methods, starting from lino prints ending in the digital era.  I wanted to show a timeline of transformation of styles in the aim to display how technology has affected printing and how styles and working methods have changed overtime.  My designs were influenced by William Morris, and the book contains a quote by him which summarises ‘how art is made by the people for the people’ which I felt was a very strong and truthful perception.

Written Piece

My written dissertation provides a thorough account how technologies impact in society today and why artists have adapted their working styles by incorporating more technological based mediums.  How due to the changes in styles artists have pushed the boundaries to go beyond presenting society with unconventional works of art confronting us to question what is art and how these classifications can be drawn.  

I concluded that I believe it to be unlikely that digital art will replace traditional art, they may rival one another but technology has just brought another medium for us to use to speed up slow labour intensive tasks and for experimentation.  There are pros and cons for all types of creating methods, for example mass production raises issue of authenticity and copyright, therefore it is the creator who should decipher which medium is suitable for the creation in hand. 

Judgment of art is very personal in my opinion; digital art is a quicker process and has more flexibility and should be classified as an art in its own right and should not be frowned upon as it has brought art accessible to the nation.  Nevertheless, painting and its associated crafts require a technical skill and aptitude, which Is far harder to learn but far more rewarding once mastered.  I hope these skills will not be lost over time as modern technology and the desire for instant results in the modern world engulfs us.

Through the format of the magazine we have tried to achieve some form of physical uniqueness and by using two joined triangular sides as the format we have also allowed it to carry out two functions; firstly it still performs as a traditional magazine, providing the space for both image and text alongside one another. However, there is a second function whereby both the format and layout allow the right side of the magazine to perform as a purely visual catalogue free from the interruption of text when folded. Conceptually we are trying to achieve a magazine that breaks traditional rules of format and layout and creates a new visual experience for the reader.

This Brief was based on the Four Elements – Earth, Wind, Fire, Water.

I choose Fire.  Through creating little models with match sticks I promoted my selected element.  This could be used further for an Advertising Campaign for a matchstick brand such as Swan Vester.

Through combining mixed responses from the general public with official options from the lastminute.com website I generated a poster campaign showing what people want to do in their last minute.  This campaign can be implemented into any public space.  To aid this campaign I have also created a 20 second animation that could be used as a viral campaign on the Internet or could be shown as a short TV Ident as a commercial that lastminute.com sponsors.  This campaign is designed to be both INFORMATIVE and INTERACTIVE to the general public.

This was a poster competition for the Royal Opera House, that I entered into the D&AD awards.  The brief was through poster advertising encourage the public to discover opera and ballet at the Royal Opera House.  Within my campaign I wanted to illustrate a huge variety of cultures and people of all ages within my audience to show the diversity of the opera and ballet, and the different audiences it could appeal too.

Non verbal Communication such as facial expression and tone have been said to express more meaning than words themselves in a spoken message.
